Treatment for Gum Disease

Forgetting to floss is one secret you unfortunately cannot hide because of a pesky thing called gum disease. Dr. Langellier and the staff at Bowtie Dental in Grand Rapids, MI are experienced at treating periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, with your comfort in mind. Gum disease is a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums and surrounding tissue. Ouch!

Gum disease begins when certain bacteria in plaque produce toxins and enzymes that irritate the gums and cause inflammation. The resulting inflammation, which may be painless, can damage the attachment of the gums and bone to the teeth.

A good oral hygiene routine practiced for a few minutes twice a day can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal diseases and tooth decay.  By brushing your teeth twice a day and cleaning between teeth once a day with the dental floss or another interdental cleaner, you can help protect your gum tissue and health.

There are a variety of treatments for gum disease depending on the stage of disease, how you may have responded to earlier treatments, and your overall health. Treatments range from nonsurgical therapies that control bacterial growth, to surgery, to restoring supportive tissues. In some patients, the nonsurgical procedure of scaling and root planing is all that is needed to treat gum diseases. Surgery is needed when the tissue around the teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with nonsurgical options.

Dr. Langellier will examine your gum tissues and evaluate your risk for gum disease at every appointment. He will evaluate and recommend any treatment that is necessary and what you deserve in order to keep your mouth healthy and your smile the one you love.
