In general, we recommend that you schedule a teeth cleaning every six months. Although, our dentist in Wyoming, MI, may recommend more frequent teeth cleanings if you have a chronic oral health condition that requires close monitoring, such as periodontitis.
Here’s what you can expect during your teeth cleaning at Bowtie Dental. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our dental office in Wyoming, Michigan. We’d be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about your oral health.
Your dental hygienist will take a cursory look around your mouth, looking for obvious issues that have to do with the teeth and gums. If they detect something that requires our dentist’s immediate attention, they’ll flag down Dr. Langellier. Otherwise, they’ll move onto the next step of your teeth cleaning appointment.
We may need to take X-rays during your appointment depending on how long it’s been since your last ones. Dental X-rays allow us to see below the surface and beyond what the naked eye can see. For example, Dr. Langellier may be able to detect a cavity between your teeth or wisdom teeth developing in the jaw.
We use a dental tool called a “scaler” to gently remove plaque and tartar deposits on your teeth. While you can remove plaque at home by brushing and flossing, only a skilled dental professional will be able to remove tartar.
If left untreated, tartar buildup can create the perfect conditions for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems. That’s why we recommend seeing us at least every six months for your routine dental cleanings.
After the hygienist is done removing plaque and tartar, they’ll ask you to select a flavored tooth polish for the next step. This polish has a gritty texture that helps remove any lingering plaque and tartar. It also helps to make your teeth feel smooth and clean. Your hygienist will use a high-powered toothbrush to polish your teeth and have you rinse when they’re done.
For the next step in your dental cleaning, your hygienist will floss to remove any plaque or food particles that could be hiding between your teeth. This ensures that you leave our office with a totally clean and polished smile.
After the teeth cleaning, Dr. Langellier will examine your teeth, gums, and any X-rays we may have taken from your appointment. If we detected any issues during your appointment, Dr. Langellier will be able to diagnose your condition and recommend a treatment plan to restore your oral health.
This is also a good opportunity to ask Dr. Langellier any questions you may have about your oral health. Our dentist in Wyoming, Michigan, would be more than happy to answer any of your questions or concerns.
