A dental crown is a cap that sits over a tooth, restoring its full strength and appearance. To place the crown, you'll need to schedule two appointments with Bowtie Dental.

During your first visit, we'll prepare your tooth for the crown and take impressions. When you return to our office, we'll place the permanent crown over your tooth.

Here's what else you need to know about the dental crown procedure.

Signs You May Need a Dental Crown

Dr. Langellier can match your crown to the exact color of your natural teeth with porcelain. The result is a healthier, more attractive smile.

He may recommend a crown for the following reasons:

  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing or restore a tooth that fractured
  • Attach a bridge or cover a dental implant
  • Cover a misshapen or discolored tooth
  • Cover a tooth that has had a root canal
  • Replace a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining

What to Expect

First, Dr. Langellier will need to file down your tooth so the crown is able to fit over top. Next, he'll use advanced technology to scan the tooth and send the digital impressions to a dental lab. The lab will then create a durable dental crown to fit over your tooth.

The lab will make your crown out of the strongest porcelain available. That way, you can have a tooth-colored crown without compromising strength.

While you're waiting for the lab, Dr. Langellier will place a temporary crown over your tooth. This will protect your tooth until you come in for your second appointment.

When you return to our office, your permanent crown will be ready. Dr. Langellier will ensure that your crown is the right shade to match the rest of your smile. He'll then remove the temporary crown and replace it with the permanent one.

Next, Dr. Langellier will make sure the crown has a comfortable fit and doesn't affect your bite. As a final step, he'll bond the permanent dental crown in place.
